Empty Bus Eireann bus leaves trail of destruction at Dublin Airport after rolling down ramp

Nobody was injured after an empty double decker bus rolled backwards down a ramp at Dublin Airport yesterday morning.

Sources at the scene said the matter was under investigation but it appears that the bus had rolled backwards down the ramp leading to Terminal 2, demolished a set of traffic lights and a trolley bay, and then crossed two lanes of traffic to the airport car park before finally coming to a halt on a grass embankment.

The incident left a trail of destruction and the Bus Eireann double decker blocking the car park entrance lane.

Sources said there were no passengers or driver on the bus at the time of the incident.

The back window of the 161 D registered coach was smashed and some damage caused to the bodywork, but the main damage was to the street furniture and airport equipment.

Signage and traffic lights were flattened as the bus rolled over them and airport police were forced to close the entrance lanes to the car park as investigations got underway into the cause of the crash.

A passenger who arrived at the scene seconds after the incident told Independent.ie it was ‘a miracle’ nobody was killed.

“A big crowd of people had gathered around the bus, I thought somebody must have been hit or under it.

“It’s a miracle that nobody was injured or killed, the airport is so busy this morning.”

Statement

A spokeswoman for Bus Eireann told Independent.ie: “Bus Éireann are currently investigating an incident involving one of our vehicles at Dublin Airport.

“The vehicle involved was not in service at the time.

“There were no passengers on board, and no-one was injured.”
