Get to know ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems

Our world is experiencing great change. External forces and their impacts have forced businesses to adapt their operations quickly. The importance of adopting more sustainable practices cannot be understated, with environmental challenges demanding that businesses take responsibility for their ecological footprint.

ISO 14001: An Overview

ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems. It facilitates the reduction of a business’ environmental impact, guiding them through regulatory compliance in a sustainable fashion. Implementing such measures result in a “win-win” scenario, with the business experiencing growth in new markets and our planet being protected along the way.

Core Principles and Benefits

This accreditation emphasizes continuous improvement and overcoming future challenges through the implementation of proactive measures. The core principles include:

  • Plan, Do, Check, Act (a.k.a. “PDCA”) cycle. This is carried out in three main stages:
        • Conducting an audit of current environmental management practices to create a clear picture of what is current practice
        • Create a programme of measures to be taken/developed, and a schedule for when these will be incorporated
        • Evaluate the new practices via regular auditing, and update the environmental management changes as necessary
    • Resource efficiency and waste reduction, promoting a more cognizant approach to resource usage
    • Creating an environmental policy both in-house through trainings, and externally through the business interactions

A business could see a number of benefits from achieving an ISO 45001 accreditation:

    • Stronger risk management with established contingencies to adapt to external change
    • Enhanced brand reputation with customer base (both existing and potential)
    • Compliance with environmental regulations, avoiding any legal penalties or repercussions

Let’s hear from a Flex-pert

Our COO speaks on the value receiving the ISO 14001 accreditation
“It was a watershed moment getting this accreditation, excuse the pun. We strive for growth in new markets but if the growth is unsustainable, then our efforts would inadvertently be impacting us and our environment negatively.”

“By achieving this accreditation, we can say wholeheartedly that our operations are in line with the best practices when it comes to having a green mindset.”

Looking ahead: Why it is Essential for the Future to be Sustainable?

The future is contingent on the acts of today. Environmental challenges are becoming more pressing and complex, with climate change, scarce-resource depletion, or ecological change at the forefront. Sustainable business is no longer a “nice-to-have”, and the ISO 14001 accreditation allows organizations to change tact, adopting new and sustainable practices to create a positive impact for the world that they operate in.

At FlexManager, our ISO accreditations are achievements that we hold dear. This is the second segment of this series, where we are sharing how our ISO accreditations have contributed to our Flex-pedition to provide the highest standard of quality, security, and efficiency to our customers. We look forward sharing our next installation, which will look at ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems.
