ISO 14001: An Overview

ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems. It facilitates the reduction of a business’ environmental impact, guiding them through regulatory compliance in a sustainable fashion. Implementing such measures result in a “win-win” scenario, with the business experiencing growth in new markets and our planet being protected along the way.

Core Principles and Benefits

This accreditation emphasizes continuous improvement and overcoming future challenges through the implementation of proactive measures. The core principles include:

  • Plan, Do, Check, Act (a.k.a. “PDCA”) cycle. This is carried out in three main stages:
        • Conducting an audit of current environmental management practices to create a clear picture of what is current practice
        • Create a programme of measures to be taken/developed, and a schedule for when these will be incorporated
        • Evaluate the new practices via regular auditing, and update the environmental management changes as necessary
    • Resource efficiency and waste reduction, promoting a more cognizant approach to resource usage
    • Creating an environmental policy both in-house through trainings, and externally through the business interactions

A business could see a number of benefits from achieving an ISO 45001 accreditation:

    • Stronger risk management with established contingencies to adapt to external change
    • Enhanced brand reputation with customer base (both existing and potential)
    • Compliance with environmental regulations, avoiding any legal penalties or repercussions
