Construction Worker Mental Health: The Hidden Risk?
In just a few short weeks, we’ll soon be into October; time is passing by, but what’s changing when it comes to suicide rates among construction workers? And what can be done to combat it?

During the wintertime we prepare for the temperatures to lower and the roads to freeze. We get ready for the cold at home by heating our homes, but what can we do at work? How can we keep our employees safe? Management, alongside the employee themselves, hold the responsibility of ensuring that employees are safe.
Here are our five tips if you are working in cold weather this winter, and how you can use FlexManager to implement them:
When employees must drive for work in adverse weather, the risks increase significantly. Emphasize the importance of reducing speed, increasing following distances, and being vigilant for black ice, especially during early mornings or late evenings. Regular vehicle checks for tires, brakes, and fluid levels, using the FlexManager Asset Inspections module, can provide additional assurance.
Proactive identification of potential dangers is key to effective workplace winter safety. Regularly conduct comprehensive risk assessments to pinpoint existing and emerging hazards related to frosty weather on and around your premises. Pay particular attention to common cold-weather risks like slips, trips, and falls on ice and snow, ensuring pathways and parking areas are frequently inspected and maintained. To learn more about Risk Assessments, visit our module page here.
For employees whose roles require them to work outdoors, providing suitable cold-weather gear is a non-negotiable. This includes insulated hats, waterproof gloves, safety boots with enhanced traction, and high-visibility thermal padded jackets. Installing a comprehensive Stock Management module can assist you in making sure that all workers are provided with these essentials.
Beyond outdoor safety, ensuring indoor workspaces are properly insulated and heated to comfortable, safe temperatures is crucial. Regularly check heating systems and seal drafts to prevent cold spots. For areas prone to frost or ice accumulation (e.g., loading docks, unheated storage areas), implement strict clearing and maintenance protocols. Using FlexManager’s Audits & Inspections, you can check environments to ensure lighting in all areas to ensure visibility for all, and remove trip hazards once identified.
Education is a powerful tool in mitigating winter risks. Provide mandatory safety training to all employees on the dangers of cold stress, frostbite, and hypothermia. Teach them to recognize the early symptoms of these conditions in themselves and others, along with appropriate first aid and preventive measures. These trainings can be provided through an employee’s Training Manager module.
