5 Compliance Risks That Keep HSEQ Managers Up at Night

A construction worker considering five compliance risks

Every construction site has its ghosts. Not the ones in the stairwell after dark, but the compliance gaps that hang around unseen until an inspector, an auditor or an incident brings them out. For HSEQ managers, those risks are what make for sleepless nights. Here are five of the most common ones, and how to exorcise them for good.

The ghost of expired training

A worker turns up with a Safe Pass card that expired last month. An operator’s plant ticket lapsed during the summer and nobody noticed. On a busy site with rotating crews and subcontractors, training records can slip out of date quietly, and the first time anyone checks might be after something has gone wrong. The fix: Use Training Manager to keep training and competency records in a central system that flags expiry dates in advance. That way, you can rebook courses before certification lapses, not after.

The phantom RAMS

Risk assessments and method statements that were written for a different job, copied from the last project, or never actually briefed to the crew doing the work. On paper, everything looks compliant. In reality, the people on the ground may have no idea what controls they’re supposed to follow.
The fix: Use RAMS and link RAMS to specific tasks, and record that workers have been briefed and have signed to confirm. Review them when the work or conditions change, not just at the start of the project.

The subcontractor in the shadows

Main contractors are responsible for coordinating safety across everyone on site. Under Ireland’s Construction Regulations, that includes duties held by the PSCS (Project Supervisor Construction Stage). But subcontractor paperwork has a habit of going missing: insurance certificates, safety statements, competency evidence and induction records spread across emails and filing cabinets. The fix: Use Subcontractor Manager to register subcontractor companies, approve them, assigns them to sites, and closes them out, so you know who’s compliant and who isn’t.
