Quality Assurance Compliance Gaps Let Imported Steel Fail
Quality assurance compliance failures are at the centre of a $400,000 fine handed to a Victorian construction fabricator after an imported steel truss failed, collapsing part of a public recreation centre under construction. WorkSafe Victoria found the company had sub contracted fabrication of the truss to an overseas supplier but never had a competent person verify the welding met the design and fabrication requirements before the structure was erected. A welded connection failed months later, and the partially built section came down. No one was on site at the time.
The regulator was clear that the building had been at structural risk for months before the failure, with the outcome determined by luck rather than process. It is a pointed reminder that importing structural materials shifts risk onto the receiving company’s own verification systems, not away from them.
FlexManager’s Document Control and Assurance Assessments are designed to close that exact gap, giving facilities and construction teams a structured way to confirm supplier quality documentation against design requirements before materials go into a build, with Asset Inspections tracking ongoing structural checks afterwards.
When materials arrive from an overseas supplier, does your business have a documented step confirming they meet design and safety requirements before they are used? Book a demo with FlexManager to see how our Quality Control tools support that verification.
