In Hungary, Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, announced that large manufacturers that are found to have polluted will receive bigger fines than previously. It comes off the back of a newly setup environmental authority, which aims to keep tabs on battery manufacturers, recycling, and decommissioning.

It’s all part of a new governmental approach to tackling emissions by companies operating in Hungary as Magyar’s regime aims to crack down on those they deem to be the worst offenders. Magyar discussed exactly how this would be implemented, hinging on a three-strike policy, in particular.

“If a large company violates environmental ‌regulations ⁠for a third time within five years, there will be a minimum fine that is at least half a percent of the company’s annual net revenue,” Hungary’s Prime Minister, Magyar, said.

Magyar drew particular attention to Samsung, which was fined a few times from 2022 to 2023, saying that in that instance, the fine would be approximately 5 billion forints, which is around €13 million. It’s a sizeable upper limit and will no doubt catch the eye of companies working across the industries potentially impacted.
