New Jersey Data Centre Fined $1M for Environmental Violations
A data centre in New Jersey has received a $1 million fine for environmental permit compliance violations. The penalty was given by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The fine totalled $1.07 million, and it was given under the New Jersey Air Pollution Control Act. The reason for the fine was due to the data centre installing and running some 62 power generators that did not have the relevant DEP permits.
It arrives following a facility inspection back in July that resulted in the power generators being spotted, despite having not been present in December of the year prior. The company in question was DataOne, who were given an order to acquire the permits immediately.
“This enforcement action – by far the largest ever taken against a data center in New Jersey and possibly one of the largest such actions in the nation – sends a clear message that these facilities will not be constructed or operated with impunity in this state,” DEP Commissioner Ed Potosnak said.
