California Company Hit with $150k+ Fines for Alleged Violations
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) gave Blackbird Mountain Guides $151,300 worth of fines after it concluded that the company had made over half a dozen alleged violations, alleged workplace training violations among them. Just one fine accounted for $81,000 worth of the amount that Blackbird Mountain Guides has been told to pay.
It all stems from an incident earlier this year, in February, when an avalanche struck as a group of 15 were on a trek in Sierra Nevada, taking the lives of nine people in total—six skiers and three employees of the company who were professional guides. The surviving six people were found only after rescuers battled stormy weather to locate and reach them. Cal/OSHA indicated that Blackbird Mountain Guides did not “correct the imminent hazard posed by traveling in avalanche terrain when the avalanche danger was rated high.”
Plus, the alleged workplace violations—of which there are five—include the notion that they did not provide adequate workplace training.
