Pollution Control Company Fines Minnesota Mining Business Almost $23,000
A Minnesota mining operation has been ordered to pay nearly $23,000 dollars. It comes after a governing body said they had not tested if its emissions of particulate matter were inside allotted limits.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) were the governing body who took the action. United Taconite, which is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs, were the enterprise at the receiving end of the decision.
It all stems from a November 2023 deadline for testing the emissions. The MPCA says United Taconite did not meet the deadline in time. For context, United Taconite’s iron ore mining operation produces crushed ore that is subsequently transported to a processing centre. A statement from the United Taconite said that it did not agree with the MPCA’s decision.
