Companies in Québec are sure to be on high alert with the news that specific environmental fines are being increased ten times from what they previously were. This is as a result of the Environment Quality Act, which has been introduced to foster greater eco compliance.

A number of industries are being directly targeted through this act, with mining, cement plants, petroleum refineries, foundries, and many more among the affected industries. It’s a significant increase in terms of the cost of the fines—for example, the offence for releasing contaminants into the environment would have once seen a company receive a $30,000 minimum fine, but that has now been increased to $300,000 minimum, which is a notable rise indeed.

The new environmental fine increases came into effective on August 13 of this year, so they are already certain to be top of mind across companies working in the impacted industries. No doubt, many are sure to take the developments seriously, and this will likely mean more of a focus on environmental compliance across the board.
