In England, a senior Health and Safety Executive (HSE) official has spoken about the potential difficulties of implementing a universal maximum workplace temperature. Speaking at the HSE’s AGM, the executive detailed that the Approved Code of Practice supporting the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 would undergo a discussion on revisions later in 2026.

Rick Brunt, the HSE’s engagement and policy division director, touched on the notion that it is not always possible to have a one-size-fits-all approach to a maximum workplace temperature. He commented that different workplace environments and different workplace surroundings mean that it may not be practical to introduce a maximum workplace temperature that suits every circumstance. The comments come amid the recent extreme weather experienced in England and across Europe this summer.

Some trade unionists and climate activists have called for greater controls and safety measures around a maximum workplace temperature, and the upcoming potential revisions to the Approved Code of Practice supporting the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 could be a welcome update for many of them.
